Why do LED lights seem relatively expensive?

Although the purchase price is high, LED lights are actually far cheaper than halogen bulbs to own and operate. Here are a few key numbers to consider:

  • Halogen MR16 bulbs cost approximately £2.50 each and they last for about 1 year in normal use. Over a fifteen year period, the cost would be 15 x £2.50. The total cost of halogen bulbs over a fifteen year period would therefore be £37.50.
  • LED bulbs cost approximately £20 each and they last for 25 years in normal use. Over a fifteen year period, the cost would be 1 x £20 / 25 x 15. sThe total cost of LED bulbs over a fifteen year period would be £12.00.

The saving on bulb costs alone is £25.50!

Now consider the energy costs. Assuming one bulb is used for an average of 2.7 hours per day and the cost of electricity is £0.12 per KWh, the operating costs are as follows:

Halogen 50w: 49.275 KW = £5.91

LED 7w: 6.90 KW = £0.827

The saving on energy costs on a single bulb over one year is over £5.00!
