Project Story

LightPlanet have a long-standing relationship with HCC and their MTC contractor, Oakray Ltd. Together, all three organisations are committed not just to delivering sustainable projects, but also to maximising the potential of these projects for reducing carbon emissions and saving public money.

Apsley One could not be a better example of this, combining the power of high quality, high efficacy LED lighting, with smart working environments, to adapt an existing working space to accommodate 300 additional people, with 334 fewer light fittings and an annual reduction in lighting Kwh and CO2 consumption of 76%.

The Apsley site has two HCC buildings, housing approximately 800 staff, the main impetus behind the project was to reduce consumption by moving all staff into one building and creating a comfortable working environment, using flexible open plan spaces, and expanding remote working facilities. LightPlanet were responsible for the full lighting design, specification, and supply of the new LED fittings. We really wanted to showcase the difference between installing any LED fittings and the best LED fittings, in terms of efficacy and quality, which translate in a real-world application, to maximised performance and sustainability.

Project Solution

Energy Saving

The main energy savings came from replacing the existing 4x14W T5 600×600 fittings with an ultra-high efficacy backlit LED panel, delivering 3500 lumens from 23W (152 luminaire lumens/watt). In addition to the reduced wattages, we were also able to reduce the number of fittings across the open plan spaces, from 756 to 422. This reduction was partly down to the new building layout, but mainly achievable due to the backlit panel’s frameless diffuser, which gives 13% extra output and a wider beam angle, with no increase in wattage, this meant we could achieve sufficient levels of lux and uniformity, with wider spacings.

Aesthetic

For the project aesthetic, we were keen to maintain as much diversity within the individual spaces and retain some elements of the project which were at risk of being omitted, due to budget constraints. In the canteen space, the idea of a large, suspended lighting feature had been included in the original brief. It was clear that due to the size of the fitting required and the complexity of suspension location, that this would never make the final spec. Using a fairly simple recessed LuxFrame fitting into the angled 600×600 grid above the canteen, we were able to construct a feature wall, with minimal impact on the project budget.

Budget

The full lighting project at Apsley was delivered on budget with no omissions from our specification. The project met the SALIX requirements for both payback and £/CO2t saved, and as a result, was fully funded.
